THE XXXVI INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS “NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF GYNECOLOGIC DISEASES” WITH ENDOSCOPY COURSE WAS HELD ONLINE ON JUNE 06-09, 2023 IN MOSCOW

The Congress was streamed from the RIA NOVOSTI (the Russian News and Information Agency) studio and the studio of the Center itself.

The Congress opened by the greetings of the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation Mikhail Murashko. He noted that the Congress, over the years has become a highly respected platform where the most important and topical issues are discussed:

“The range of topics covers various aspects of women's health: from modern imaging techniques in the diagnosis of gynecological pathology to the advanced technology in operative gynecology. In fact, each topic will be considered through the lens of preserving and restoring reproductive potential and health. I want to note that the motivation of woman by doctor-gynecologist for continuation to continue her reproductive function is one of the important components in medical practice”, - the Minister noted.

Mikhail Murashko also noted that the participation of the world's leading experts clearly demonstrates the high significance of the Congress and assured that the event helps the widest range of specialists to gain new knowledge for effective work.

Traditionally, the participants of the Congress were welcomed by the Head of the Federal Service for Surveillance in Healthcare Alla Samoylova. She congratulated everyone on the opening of the Congress and noted that it is a large-scale international forum for discussing the results of the latest research, innovative practices and advances in gynecology and reproductive medicine.

She also noted that doctors are now facing ambitious goals: increasing the birth rate, reducing mortality and increasing life expectancy in Russia. To achieve these goals, it is important to preserve and strengthen reproductive health and increase the reproductive potential of the population. And the Congress contributes to the solution of these issues.

The scientific program of the Congress was opened by the Director of the National Medical Research Center for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology of Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation Gennady Sukhikh:

“This Congress has a unique history, sound, atmosphere, a huge number of our friends from all regions of the country and abroad. A complex program was made up, in the formation of which our foreign colleagues from 14 countries took a great part, who will demonstrate their experience, their competences in the field of modern high-tech surgery”, - said the Director.

Academician of RAS Leila Adamyan, in her greeting thanked all the experts who participated in the scientific program and also noted the importance of the Congress, which allows to learn about the unique experience of the world's leading scientists and discuss topical issues:

 “We have already held 52 international congresses. This became possible because they are essential, desirable and of great importance for personnel training, education, enlightenment, introduction of the advanced technologies, improvement of life quality and reproductive outcomes. The current Congress is attended by 60 stars of international surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, and oncology. The name of each of them is written in the history of medical triumphs”, - Leila Adamyan said.

Three of the four days of the Congress opened with Endoscopy course including special sessions on technical innovations, nuances of surgical energies application, features of reconstructive surgery, and suturing techniques.

The Congress program featured Experts’ school on hysteroscopy, which covered the use of bipolar resectoscopes in office surgery, as well as the gold standard of diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy.

On the first day, Prof. A. Wattiez (Dubai, UAE) performed a live total laparoscopic hysterectomy, showed the anatomical features, the knowledge of which will help to optimize the surgical intervention and reduce the risk of complications.

On the second day, Prof. М. Malzoni (Avellino, Italy) led a master class presenting tactics of abdominal cancer surgery on the example of his patent, as well as effective technique of vaginal suturing. 

On the third day of the Congress, Prof. A. Wattiez (Dubai, UAE) gave a second live presentation of technical innovations, surgical techniques and surgical modeling in the work with postoperative “niches”.

The Congress included 7 plenary sessions focused on such issues as diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation in endometriosis; new technologies in reproductive medicine; innovations in gynecologic surgery, obstetrics and oncogynecology; endocrine aspects of gynecologic diseases.

A special place was dedicated to key lectures on the role of artificial intelligence in robotic surgery, and on how to predict and manage with complications.

A key part of the program was the presentation by Prof. J. Marescaux (Strasbourg) “How computer technologies are changing surgery on the pelvic organs”. He spoke about his views on the present and future of robotic surgery, considered in detail the current possibilities of using artificial intelligence in medicine, showed new highly specialized robots for transvaginal hysterectomy.

The professor also emphasized the possibilities of augmented reality for the accuracy of surgical interventions, which allows to visualize all anatomical details. A part of the presentation he devoted to the development of remote robot-assisted surgeries at a great distance with the help of teleoperations.

The key lecture was presented by A. Stepanian (Atlanta, USA), who detailed the new horizons of surgical intelligence in gynecology. She spoke about the upcoming global medical reality, how artificial intelligence helps surgeons, emphasized the fundamental differences between human intelligence and artificial intelligence, and the importance of collective wisdom in our ability to adapt.

In addition, Prof. S. Bettocchi (Bari, Italy), Prof. J. Hamou (Paris, France), and Prof. G. Bigatti (Crema, Italy) led the School of Experts on Hysteroscopy with live broadcasts from the operating rooms. They spoke about new possibilities of hysteroscopic surgery in gynecology, in particular, about innovations and progress in hysteroscopy, as well as possibilities of using visual control during intrauterine surgeries

Traditionally the Young Scientists’ Contest was organized as part of the Congress. The panel of experts judged the scientific research works and developments for the treatment of gynecological diseases. Among a large number of contest applications, it was decided to award prizes to 6 most promising works:

1st place was shared by: Sukhareva T.A. (30 y.o., the National Medical Research Center for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology of Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Moscow), “Improving the diagnosis and surgical treatment of patients with defects in the uterine scar after cesarean section” and Grigoryan I.E. (26 y.o., the National Medical Research Center for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology of Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Moscow), “Reproductive health and addiction to psychoactive substances (Modern technologies in diagnostics)”.

2nd place was shared by:  Pivazyan L.G. (y.o., the National Medical Research Center for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology of Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Moscow), “Modern technologies for pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT-A) in women with infertility: to whom and when? (Meta-analysis of 19 clinical studies)” and Lukyanova K.D. (30 y.o., The Ural Research Institute of Maternity and Child Care, Yekaterinburg), “Genetic predictors of the development of pelvic floor dysfunctions in women after childbirth”.

3rd place was shared by: Shumeikina A.O. (23 y.o., Novosibirsk State Medical University, Novosibirsk), “Clinical and morphological rationale for the treatment of recurrent cervical cancer” and Ivanov O.A. (25 y.o., Mariinsky City Hospital, Saint Petersburg), “Modern suture material and the effect of energy for coagulation”.

According to official statistics, 3,814 attendees from 29 countries, 449 cities and 85 regions of Russia enrolled for the congress.

The largest number of registered participants was from Russia - 3,577. Experts from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Brazil, Hungary, Germany, Georgia, Djibouti, Israel, India, Spain, Italy, Kazakhstan, Canada, Kyrgyzstan, China, Latvia, Moldova, UAE, Portugal, USA, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, France, South Ossetia, and Japan also joined the broadcast.

For the convenience of listeners, the Congress was streamed in parallel on the official Congress website and on YouTube, where the total number of views over 4 days was 18,802. More than 3,000 people joined the stream via the official website (and up to 2,000 people via YouTube). Dozens of positive reviews and comments were received as well.

The online format of the Congress made it possible to attract a large number of the best Russian and foreign experts from leading medical organizations from all over the world, as well as more than 3.5 thousand specialists who seek professional development.

Thus, the Congress implements strategically important tasks of the state policy in the field of healthcare and is of great importance for medicine, science and education.
