A joint project with WHO on “Improving the quality of hospital care to reduce maternal, newborn and child mortality in 4 countries (Tajikistan, Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia and Vietnam)”

October 16-November 02 in Kyrgyz Republic and October 30-November 15, 2023 in Tajikistan, the eighth mission of a joint project with WHO on “Improving the quality of hospital care to reduce maternal, newborn and child mortality in 4 countries (Tajikistan, Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia and Vietnam)” was held.

Participants of the Meetings and Workshops: representatives of the Russian embassies in Tajikistan and Kyrgyz Republic, representatives of the WHO European and Regional Offices, and Ministries of Health of participating countries, heads of maternity departments, pediatric departments, obstetrician-gynecologists, neonatologists, and midwives from district hospitals. The Russian WHO Collaborating Centers were represented by the experts from the Kulakov National Medical Research Center for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation (Yarotskaya E.L., Head of the Department of International Cooperation; Khamatkhanova E.M., Head of the Department of Educational Simulation Technologies in Medicine; Teplyakova O.V., Head of the Methodological Accreditation and Simulation Center; Gapaeva M.D., specialist of the Department of Simulation and Educational Technologies in Medicine; Kisova A.K., Midwife; Gorina K.A., Obstetrician-Gynecologist; Babich D.A., Obstetrician-Gynecologist; Nikonets A.D., Anesthesiologist-Resuscitator), and the National Medical Research Center for Children's Health of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation (Komarova O.V., Deputy Director for International Relations and Affairs, Taratina M.E., Leading Researcher, Pediatrician; Yasakov D.S., Leading Researcher).

At the first stage, training courses were conducted and the quality of medical care for mothers, newborns and children was assessed in each pilot hospital of two countries (Kyrgyz Republic: Bazar-Korgon, Balykchy, Batken, Bishkek, Jalal-Abad, Kyzyl-Kiya, etc. and Tajikistan: Ayni, Dushanbe, Istaravshan, Isfara, Konibodom, Panjakent, Khujand).

In the second stage, the teams analyzed and summarized the results of the health care services quality improvement in the pilot hospitals in two countries.

In the third stage, semi-annual Quality Improvement Workshops and National Steering Group Meetings were carried out.

The agenda for the semi-annual Quality Improvement Workshops covered a number of important issues:

  • Review of the results of quality assessment of services for mothers, newborns and children in pilot hospitals (focus area: neonatology, obstetrics, and pediatrics);
  • Review of the results of studies on the effectiveness of partograph, hand hygiene, and patients referral in pilot hospitals;
  • Review of updated data on activities associated with NCD: smoking during pregnancy, anemia, hyperglycemia in pregnancy.

In addition, the National strategy on the Quality of Care and Patient Safety in the Kyrgyz Republic 2023-2030 and Operational Plan 2023-2026 were presented at the Semi-Annual Workshop in Kyrgyzstan.

The National Steering Group Meetings highlighted the main achievements of the project, remaining problems and ways to solve them. Future plans, and continuation and scaling of best practices throughout the country were also discussed.
