January 16-19, 2024, the XVIIIth International Congress on Reproductive Medicine was held in a hybrid format at the Kulakov National Medical Research Center for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology

3694 participants from 29 countries, 375 cities and 84 regions of Russia took part in the Congress.

The Grand opening of the Congress started with the welcome speech of Eugenia Kotova – Deputy Minister of Health of the Russian Federation. She spoke on behalf of the Minister of Helath of Russia, Mikhail Murashko, and noted that President Putin declared the year 2024 as the Year of the Family, which enhances the importance of scientific and educational activities in reproductive medicine. Quoting the Minister's speech Ms. Kotova especially emphasized the role of innovative plastic and organ-preserving surgeries for severe forms of hyperplastic processes, tumors of the reproductive system, as well as in the treatment of pregnancy failure and infertility.

The participants of the Congress were also welcomed by the Head of the Federal Service for Surveillance in Healthcare Alla Samoylova.

The scientific program of the Congress was introduced by Gennnady Sukhikh – professor, academision of RAS, Director of the Kulakov Center. His speech was mostly dedicated to the challenges arisinf for modern reproductive medicine which are due to the increase in the childbearing at the late reproductive age. He also highlighted the results of innovative studies on ART that were elaborated within the Center and their importance to overcome female and male factors of fertility impairment.

The scientific program included more than 100 speakers, including 21 reports from the Kulakov Center and 19 reports made by the representatives of leading Russian scientific, educational and clinical centers.

The Congress comprised 8 plenary sessions: endometriosis: diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation; endometriosis and associated conditions of the reproductive system; reproductive surgery: achievements, problems, solutions; innovations and prospects of reproductive surgery; topical problems of reproduction and reproductive health: science and practice; gynecologic oncology: reproduction and survival rate; integrated approach to prevention and treatment of benign gynecologic diseases; risks of pregnancy loss and their management.

The most important component of the Congress was live broadcasting of surgeries performed at Italian hospitals (prof. М. Malzoni) and in operating rooms of the Kulakov Center. Such foreign experts as G. Bigatti, A. Wattiez and Sh. Puntambekar performed 7 laparoscopic surgeries in the operating rooms of the Center: metroplasty (uterine scar), hysterectomy (large myoma), panhysterectomy, pelvic lymphadenectomy (endometrial cancer), retrocervical endometriosis, ovarian tumors and 6 hysteroscopic surgeries, including those using the IBS technique (intrauterine shaver by G. Bigatti) for endometrial polyps, placental polyps and intrauterine septum.

Throughout all the Congress days, an international course on endoscopy was held under the guidance of Prof. Leila Adamyan, which included master classes from leading foreign experts and workshops for the Congress participants on simulators with practicing surgical techniques

Traditionally, the Young Scientists Contest was held as part of the Congress. The expert jury assessed scientific works on the priority areas of reproductive medicine. Out of several dozens of entries, 4 papers were honored with the highest awards:

The 1st place was shared by Laura Pivazyan (aged 25, second-year resident, Kulakov National Medical Research Center for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology, Moscow) on “Experimental modeling and prevention of postoperative adhesions in gynecologic and pelvic surgery: morphologic and ultrastructural features” and Victoria Yudina (aged 27, post-graduate student, I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Moscow) on “Malignant neoplasms of reproductive organs as a mortality cause among young population in the Russian Federation: trends and regional peculiarities”.

The 2nd place went to Alisa Yuminova (aged 28, post-graduate student, Ural Research Institute of Maternal and Infant Care, Ekaterinburg) on “Personified tactics of surgical treatment of reproductive age patients with pelvic descent syndrome”.

The 3rd place was awarded to Veronika Pronina (aged 27, post-graduate student, Kulakov National Medical Research Center for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology, Moscow) on “Prediction of volume reduction of endometrioid ovarian cysts during suppressive hormone therapy using dienogest with emphasis on the value of the measured diffusion coefficient”.

The online format of the Congress was provided by the RIA Novosti news agency. In total, more than 11537 online views of the Congress were recorded. Every day about 3000 people connected to the Congress viewing via the official website (and about 3000 people via YouTube video hosting), the number of connections from abroad amounted to about 200 people per day. There have been dozens of positive reviews and comments about the Congress.
